That One Time I Had A TV Show
Back in 2019, I signed a deal with Netflix for a "Girl In Space" TV show. So... whatever happened to that?
Dear Creators,
I think that a lot of people know this by now, but back in 2019, my sci-fi audio drama podcast, Girl In Space, was optioned by Netflix and greenlit for development.
My wonderful, wonderful agent got me an executive producer credit and a seat in the writer’s room to co-write the pilot with the showrunner.
At the time, very few people knew this was happening, since I wasn’t allowed to talk about the show until we were a little further on in development (which was very frustrating).
But eventually the news got out (not from me!) — here’s a screenshot of a Deadline article that mentions the show, the first piece of press it received:
!["[This includes] Wondery’s crime drama Over My Dead Body and cult drama Guru: The Dark Side of Enlightenment, paranormal series Welcome to Night Vale, Neil Strauss’ investigative series To Live and Die In LA, basketball cheat scandal Whistleblower, Australian crime series The Teacher’s Pet, ESPN’s 30 for 30 on Clippers owner Donald Sterling The Sterling Affairs, and sci-fi drama Girl In Space." So… what happened?
The short answer is actually really boring — Netflix did some internal restructuring (e.g., firing and hiring), and my show, along with so many others, got the axe.
But the long answer is a lot more complicated — and if you’re interested in hearing it, I’m giving a FREE talk via Zoom this Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 8:00pm EST / 7:00pm CST / 5:00pm PST, in cooperation with the WGA-East Audio Alliance, where I’ll explain how it all went down.
So if you’re wondering:
How did I get my agent?
What does “option” mean?
How much was I paid for the TV rights?
What “Do”s and “Don’t”s did I learn along the way?
What’s Hollywood actually like?
… then this might just be the event for you. :)
Ultimately, I’m grateful to have been through this particular wringer, and to have learned so much and met so many amazing people along the way. I’m excited to share the story with you.

Thank you, as always, for reading. I know it’s really cliché to say this, but life takes a lot of unexpected twists and turns, for better and for worse. I’m just glad to be along for the ride.
Words & warmth,
Sarah
P.S. February 23 is also my brother Harrison’s birthday! He’s great.
P.P.S. Again, that link to attend my talk FOR FREE (via Zoom) is right here.

Ahhh what a hi and then I’m sure a frustrating low. My sister is an actor on tv and oh the trials and tribulations of the Hollywood scene. So glad you’re sharing. Meanwhile I’ll be over here 🤞🏻 that eventually girl in space continues!
